Seminar 1
Theme: AI, Cloud and Sustainability | Reducing Carbon Footprints in AI and Cloud with Temporal and Spatial Shifting
Speaker: Dr. Ziliang Zong, Computer Science
Abstract: The rapid expansion of Artificial Intelligence and Cloud computing has led to an unprecedented increase in global carbon emissions, posing a significant challenge to sustainability. As AI models grow larger and cloud infrastructures become more integral to everyday services, the need for innovative solutions to mitigate their environmental impact is critical. This talk explores carbon-aware computing strategies,
specifically temporal and spatial shifting, that offer a pathway to reducing the carbon footprint of these technologies. Temporal shifting enables workloads to be rescheduled based on fluctuations in renewable energy availability, while spatial shifting leverages geographical variations in carbon intensity to optimize workload distribution. Both strategies require comprehensive global carbon intensity analysis, which provides
real-time insights into regional carbon emission patterns and informs decision-making for green computing practices. This talk highlights the opportunities and challenges of these strategies to reduce emissions and drive sustainable growth in AI and Cloud computing.
